How long does it take before
my web site will be ready ?

The larger the web site the longer it will take for development,
however for guidance a 10 page static web site can be designed, developed
and launched in 3 weeks.

How much does it cost to develop
a web site ?

As mentioned in the getting
online
section, the cost of a web site is made-up of three components:

  1. Purchase of URL and hosting of web site
  2. The cost for the web
site designer to develop your site
  3. Maintenance costs.

The average price for purchase of a URL with domain hosting is about
£30 per year. Web site design is normally charged on a per page
basis, with rates starting at £70. Maintenance of a web site
is charged on an hourly rate, with this varying from £20 to
£50 depending upon complexity of site.

If you intent to sell your products and services online then you’ll
have to join a payment service provider such as WorldPay.
Payment service providers handle all the processing of your clients
payments, from asking for the card numbers to transferring the money
into your account. The joining fee for a payment service provider
is approximately £100, with a similar fee paid yearly. There’s
also a 2-5% charge on every credit card, or 50p for a debit card processed
for you.

Payments

Why should my company have
a web site ?

The future of any business is closely tied to the internet, no
matter what industry it’s based in people are looking for your services
online. If your company doesn’t have a web site to advertise its products
and services then your potential clients are going
to your competitors. If you’re not currently online then you should
be, every day that passes you’re losing customers. Read benefits
of getting online
for more information.

What pages should be in my web
site ?

The homepage of your web site should detail the products and/or
services that you supply, and what region you are prepared to do business
within. The homepage should then link to:

  • A contact details page listing the relevant details i.e. address,
    phone, fax & email etc.
  • User feedback form that will allow people contact you via the
website i.e. request for more information, request for call back
    etc.
  • If your site has anymore than 10 pages then a site map will be
    useful.
  • Terms and Conditions page specifying what people can and cant
do with the material on your website.
  • Privacy Policy detailing what you will and will not do with the
information people send you i.e. their contact details etc.
  • Pages describing the individual products and services that you
    offer.

What makes a good web site ?

Several things contribute to a good web site:

  • Ensure that you offer quality content, that is accurate and up-to-date
  • Ensure the navigation is clear
  • Quick download times are important
  • Only use Flash or animation if it does anything useful for your
    clients
  • Ensure the web site is compatible with all browsers
  • Every page in the web site should only be three “clicks” away
    from the homepage
  • Check all links are correct
